Kabelo Mabalane is making his long-awaited return to music with the release of his new single, “Everybody Needs Somebody”, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the celebrated artist’s career.
The track, which is set for release on Thursday, 3 September 2026, will be available on Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. Recorded between Johannesburg and Los Angeles, the song introduces listeners to a fresh sound from Mabalane while remaining rooted in the musical identity that has defined his career.
Mabalane, who has built a reputation both as a respected musician and pastor, says the new body of work is not about choosing between the two sides of his identity.
‘I’m not choosing between artist and pastor’
“This album isn’t me choosing between artist and pastor,” says Mabalane. “It’s me living in between them, harnessing both their strengths to impact people’s lives.”
He describes the music as “Street Psalms” – a collection built around “tight beats, declarations, encouragements, prayers and invitations”.
“These are Street Psalms – tight beats, declarations, encouragements, prayers and invitations. South Africa needs soundtracks such as these for this season,” he says.
The new music therefore represents more than a return to recording for Mabalane. It reflects the intersection of his musical roots, faith and desire to create work that speaks directly to people’s everyday experiences.
A fresh take on Mabalane’s kwaito roots
“Everybody Needs Somebody” draws on Mabalane’s unmistakable kwaito foundations, but introduces a distinctly contemporary sonic direction.
The track features a unique infusion from THE ARROWS, adding a new dimension to the song while retaining the energy and rhythm associated with Mabalane’s musical background.
The result is described as a meeting point between contemporary worship, self-identity, affirmation, soul and urban influences.
The single offers the first taste of a larger project that promises to push Mabalane’s sound forward while remaining connected to the musical language that audiences have come to know.
The beginning of a bigger musical journey
“Everybody Needs Somebody” serves as the first release from a broader body of work, with the full album, “For King and Country”, set to follow.
Ahead of the release, Mabalane is also scheduled for an exclusive interview and song drop with Tbo Touch, giving listeners an opportunity to hear more about the inspiration behind his musical return and the journey that led to the new project.
For Mabalane, however, this is only the beginning.
“This is just the start,” he says, encouraging audiences to stay connected as the story unfolds towards the full album and beyond.
