Reginald Gumede is back from the dead!

SABC1’s Amalanga Awafani is set to deliver one of its biggest twists yet when veteran actor Melusi Yeni returns as Reginald Gumede, a character viewers were led to believe was dead.

Yeni makes his return on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, bringing Reginald back into the lives of his family and the Dumas at a time when old wounds and carefully guarded secrets are already threatening to tear relationships apart.

The return immediately raises a major question for viewers: did Reginald really die, and if he did not, where has he been all this time?

His reappearance is expected to have major consequences for his son and the wider Gumede and Duma families, reopening painful chapters that many believed had been permanently closed.

A new chapter for Amalanga Awafani

Amalanga Awafani, which translates to “Days are not the Same”, is a Stained Glass TV production and airs on SABC1. The telenovela premiered in April 2025, with its second season launching in May 2026. Season two follows former Maskandi stars and millionaire twins Sabelo and Thembi Gumede as their lives change dramatically after they lose their wealth and are forced to rebuild their lives in Johannesburg.

The second season has expanded the world of the Gumedes with the introduction of the Duma family and several other new characters, while continuing to explore themes of family, ambition, betrayal, love and second chances.

At the centre of the current storyline is Sabelo, who is attempting to rebuild his music career while trying to repair his relationship with Kenosi. His twin, Thembi, is also navigating her own challenges, while Stha’s growing celebrity status is encouraging her to dream beyond her current circumstances.

Meanwhile, Sugarbasin’s increasingly dangerous decisions continue to place his family in jeopardy, while the Dumas are forced to confront secrets they have worked hard to conceal.

Against that backdrop, Reginald’s return could change everything.

Melusi Yeni’s long television journey

Yeni is a familiar face to South African television audiences, with a career spanning almost three decades. The actor and singer began his television career in the late 1990s and has appeared in some of the country’s best-known dramas and soap operas.

His breakthrough came with Tshisa, where he played Bheki Shabalala. He later took on the role of Mabutho Sokhulu in SABC1’s Sokhulu & Partners, his first major leading television role. He also played Phenyo Mazibuko in Generations and appeared in The Wild, Rhythm City, Imbewu: The Seed, Isifiso, Sibongile & The Dlaminis and Smoke & Mirrors.

Before establishing himself as an actor, Yeni was involved in music and performed with the Natal Youth Choir. His musical background also led to an association with South African music giants Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He later moved from KwaMashu to Johannesburg in 2006 to pursue acting professionally.

His return to Amalanga Awafani therefore reunites the actor with a character already deeply embedded in the show’s family drama. TVSA lists Yeni among the starring cast for both seasons as Reginald Gumede.

A return that could expose old secrets

Reginald’s comeback comes at a particularly volatile point in the story. With Sabelo attempting to rebuild his life and the Dumas dealing with their own hidden truths, his sudden reappearance threatens to disturb an already fragile family dynamic.

The mystery surrounding his disappearance is likely to become one of the show’s major storylines, particularly as his return forces characters to confront what they believed about his death.

For viewers, the question is no longer simply what happened to Reginald. It is what he knows, why he stayed away and what his return means for everyone who thought they had moved on.

Amalanga Awafani airs Monday to Friday at 18h30 on SABC1 and is also available on the SABC Plus app.
