A dispute over a cigarette between an elderly man and a younger suspect resulted in the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Johan Malieke.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 14 November 2024, at approximately 21:15 in Malaykamp, Sunrise, De Aar.

The accused, Jannie Booysen (43), stabbed Malieke during the altercation. The matter was reported to the police, leading to the prompt arrest of the suspect, who subsequently made multiple court appearances pending the finalisation of the case.

On Monday, 24 November 2025, the De Aar Regional Court convicted and sentenced Booysen to ten years’ direct imprisonment for murder.

The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Major Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Sergeant Lungile Malumla of the Sunrise Detectives for his thorough investigation, which ensured a successful prosecution and the removal of a violent offender from the streets.
