South Africa’s courts are set for another busy day on Monday, 31 August 2026, with several high profile criminal and corruption matters expected to continue.
Among the cases attracting attention are the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, the Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala attempted murder case, the corruption trial involving former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and a major fraud investigation involving Tembisa Hospital.
Senzo Meyiwa murder trial
The long running murder trial of former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa is expected to continue in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Five men are on trial for Meyiwa’s murder. They are Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Fisokuhle Ntuli and Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya.
Meyiwa was shot dead at the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, in October 2014.
The trial has been marked by disputes over evidence, the police investigation and the credibility of witnesses.
The accused have all pleaded not guilty and maintain that they were not responsible for Meyiwa’s death.
‘Cat’ Matlala back in court
Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co accused are expected back in the Johannesburg High Court as their attempted murder trial continues.
The case involves allegations of planned attacks and alleged assassination plots.
The proceedings have included testimony from police officers and security personnel, as the State works to establish its case against Matlala and the other accused.
The matter has received heightened attention because of allegations linking the case to broader concerns about organised crime and corruption in South Africa.
Matlala and his co accused deny the allegations against them.
Zandile Gumede corruption trial
Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 co accused are expected back in the Durban High Court in the long running corruption case linked to a municipal waste collection tender worth about R320 million.
The State alleges that the accused were involved in fraud, corruption and racketeering connected to the Durban Solid Waste contract.
The matter has experienced numerous delays since it began.
Proceedings were also disrupted after businessman Bongani Dlomo, one of the accused, was struck by a vehicle while walking in Durban.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Tembisa Hospital R635 million fraud case
A suspect linked to an alleged R635 million fraud scandal involving Tembisa Hospital is expected to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court.
The Hawks arrested the 37 year old suspect following an investigation into alleged procurement fraud.
Authorities allege that the procurement system was manipulated by splitting transactions into smaller amounts to avoid the R500 000 threshold that would trigger additional procurement requirements.
The suspect is expected to face charges including fraud, corruption and money laundering.
The investigation has placed renewed focus on procurement at Gauteng public hospitals and the alleged abuse of public funds.
Emfuleni electricity reconnection case
Seven Emfuleni Local Municipality employees are also expected back in court for bail proceedings linked to an alleged illegal electricity reconnection scheme.
The accused face charges including fraud, theft, money laundering and tampering with essential infrastructure.
The State alleges that residents whose electricity accounts were in arrears were offered illegal reconnections in exchange for payments.
The investigation is continuing and prosecutors have indicated that additional charges could potentially follow.
Zolani Tete murder investigation
The murder case involving former world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete is also expected to move through the courts.
Tete was shot dead in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, sending shockwaves through the country’s boxing community.
Several suspects have been arrested as police investigate the circumstances surrounding his killing.
The case is being closely watched because of Tete’s profile as a former world champion and one of South Africa’s best known boxers.
Madlanga Commission continues
While it is not a court case, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will also be closely watched on Monday.
The commission is investigating allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
The inquiry has heard explosive allegations involving senior police officials, alleged criminal networks and claims of interference in investigations.
Its proceedings have also brought renewed attention to the relationship between organised crime, law enforcement and political influence.
Usindiso Building fire case
The Usindiso Building fire matter is not expected to return to court on Monday.
The Johannesburg High Court previously postponed the matter to 9 September 2026.
Sithembiso Mdlalose faces 76 murder charges and 12 counts of attempted murder in connection with the 2023 fire in the Johannesburg building that claimed 76 lives.
The case remains one of the country’s most significant criminal matters because of the scale of the tragedy and questions surrounding responsibility for the deaths.
A closely watched day in court
Monday’s court calendar reflects some of South Africa’s biggest concerns, from violent crime and alleged organised criminal activity to corruption, public procurement fraud and failures within local government.
The proceedings involving Meyiwa, Matlala and Gumede remain particularly significant because of the national attention surrounding the accused and the allegations before the courts.
