Motlatsi Mpharu (31) was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.

The Joe Gqabi District SAPS welcomed the continued positive outcomes of crime-fighting efforts, as more heavy sentences are being handed down, a direct result of thorough investigative work by dedicated Detectives.

It is alleged that on 5 January 2025, the victim, 22-year-old Mpho Kutoana, was visiting her boyfriend’s residence when an argument broke out. The suspect accused her of being unfaithful, and in a fit of rage, tied her with an electric cable, stabbed her in the left thigh, poured petrol over her, and set her alight. In the process, the suspect also caught fire and had to extinguish the flames.

The victim sustained severe burn wounds and was admitted to Mpilisweni Hospital for two months. On 23 May 2025, the accused was found guilty of attempted murder by the Sterkspruit Regional Court and received a 25-year prison sentence. Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Major General Lindelwa Vellem, applauded the professionalism and attention to detail shown by Detective Sergeant Sibusiso Vundisa, and further commended the collaboration between the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which led to this substantial conviction.
