Since former South African president, Jacob Zuma’s arrest, the country has undergone a number of protest and looting suspected to be triggered by the former presidents arrest.
The violent protest stuck in Durban and Gauteng and people have looted businesses, vandalizing property, breaking and stealing.
On Monday 12 July, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the country asking for looters to stop.
“Property has been vandalised and destroyed. Shops have been looted. Law-abiding citizens have been threatened and intimidated. Workers are scared that they may not be able to return to work. People have died,” he said in his speech.
YouTuber and influencer Mihlali Ndamase, 23, took to social media to joke about looting a Mercedez Benz dealership.
“When are we looting Merc?” she wrote.
Social media followers did not take kindly to the joke and called it distasteful and insensitive.
Mihlali has since apologised.
“With immediate retraction, I’d like to apologize on the tweet I published earlier. I jokingly put that out without considering the harm it may cause given my position. The intent wasn’t to be insensitive,” she wrote.
“Mercedes Benz is one of my favourite car brands, I adore them, hence the joke. Of course I wouldn’t wish that on any business or person. This is a lesson learned and once again, I sincerely apologize.”
