This past weekend marked the beginning of the world’s most prestigious breaking competition – Red Bull BC One. The 18th edition of the competition had Johannesburg’s best breakers battle it out for a spot to represent the city at the national final.
Held at Constitution Hill, the cypher weekend kicked off with a series of workshops on Saturday featuring the country’s top breakers who highlighted various topics regarding the culture of breaking and what goes on behind the scenes to compete at the top level. The regional qualifying cyphers took place on Sunday where Courtnae’ Paul and Eddy B came out victorious.
“I had an absolutely amazing day, I’m going through to the b-girl final! There were no b-girls but I thought let me try my hand at the b-boy cypher and I’m super excited that I made it through to the semi-final level in that section – I think it’s always great to test yourself. We have three more stops in the tour and then the finals in April. NGI READY!!!” said Courtnae’ Paul.
34 years old Eddy B returned to the breaking competition after a while, “I think I surprised people because they weren’t expecting me to get this far. I’m looking forward to the finals in April,” said Eddy B, “I realized that there are a lot of new guys, which is good, it shows that the scene is growing, but the level can be better and with more competitions like Red Bull BC One it definitely can improve” he added.
The cypher weekends are now heading to Port Elizabeth, Cape Town as well as Oudtshoorn where each city will announce a B-boy and B-girl that will get a spot to compete at the national final set to happen in Cape Town on Saturday 24th April.
