The Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is conquering new frontiers with the establishment of an all-women-led online radio station called WOMan Radio.
The award-winning singer, humanitarian, and businesswoman has identified yet another approach to empowering women in the media space, employing and exposing the rich, un-earthed talent on the continent in programming, producing, engineering, and managerial positions.
This pioneering endeavor by the African icon is a response to this moment in time, where women from all walks of life are courageously telling their stories and blazing new trails in their unique and respective fields. The intention is to also engage more un-explored content that only the uniqueness of womanhood could reveal in the digital age. Ms. Chaka Chaka’s tireless efforts to enrich the lives of the marginalized timeously establish themselves in South Africa where women’s voices are not yet visibly concentrated on one media platform.
Since the launch of the station mid October 2020, an admirable reception from its listeners has been received, many of whom have been men, a demographic whose listenership is significant to WOMan radio, owing to the realities of the continent’s deeply fractured gendered relations. The station welcomes male listenership as a means of forging greater understanding between the two demographics.
The radio hosts are intelligent, articulate, Self and politically aware African women whose shows will openly discuss issues of health, beauty, love, spirituality and politics from their very distinctive perspectives. The guests featured are from differing generations, diverse in their knowledge, expertise, and understanding of the world they live in, bringing with them the lessons they have learned in their lives for the benefit and edification of the listener.
Nomsa Mazwai’s The Spear, Luyanda Duma’s Young People’s Corner, Yvonne “Chaka Chaka” Mhinga’s Couch Chat, Break-free with Dr. Siyajabula Mjwara, and Gabaza Tiba’s Woman’s Worldview are among the station’s presently featured radio presenters. Currently in talks with women from the rest of Africa to join and be part of the conversation, WOMan radio holds that “this is a man’s world” is history because “the future is WOMan. We are all men but those of us who bring life into this world are W(ell) O(rganized) Man.”
