An Ethiopian national was arrested on Monday, 22 December 2025, for possession of suspected stolen property.

According to information, at about 11:50, members of the South African Police Service were officially on duty conducting roadblock operations at the Middelburg Toll Plaza when they noticed a grey Nissan NP200 with Gauteng registration plates, occupied by a single male driver (38). The vehicle was stopped and the members introduced themselves to the driver.

Permission was requested to search the vehicle, which was granted. During the search, members observed that the vehicle licence disc had expired three years ago. Further verification was conducted, and the vehicle was positively identified as stolen. It was reported stolen in Benoni in 2023.

The driver was requested to produce documentation for the vehicle but failed to do so. He was subsequently arrested for possession of stolen property. The vehicle was confiscated for further investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court soon, facing the relevant charges.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest and reiterated that the police remain committed to combating crime and ensuring the safety of all communities.
