His home is filled with mourners. His mom sits on the chief mourners’ matters in the bedroom, accepting words of condolences at the Mabopane home. Rebecca says he is broken by her son’s murder and feels like one of her hands has been ripped off from her. “It’s a question mark to me, maybe he is still around,” she says in disbelief. “It’s so painful. Let it not just be interviews or a visit from a premier or councilor to my house, let it be that justice is served,” she said. Mashata was the only child and had one daughter he adopted. “He was always a smiling boy. He was very supportive.”

His neighbours described Mashata as a happy boy. “Always happy and bubbly,” one said. “This was a big shock for our community.” The Mabuse family announced that Mashata’s memorial service will take place on Thursday at TUT Stadium, Pretoria West Campus, and the funeral service at Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria on Sunday.

Gauteng Premier Payanza Lesufi said the police are dealing with inkabi. “The problem we have is assassins who are hired by people to kill. To arrest the shooters will not help until we find who are the people paying the killers,” he said. “So, to arrest the shooters will not assist until we find the people who are paying the killers. We have put a lot of resources and putting intelligence at work.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza said Tshwane police had opened two dockets of murder and attempted murder. Police have called for anyone with information to come forward, saying all information will be treated with confidentiality. Anyone with information is urged to contact 08600-10111.
