On Friday, 12 April 2024, the Durban High court sentenced Siphakamiso Jeffrey Sosibo (31) for the murder of a metro police officer at Umlazi in Durban. She was sentenced to Life imprisonment for murder, and 15 years direct imprisonment for attempted murder, Possession of unlicensed firearm and Possession of ammunition.

In the evening of 6 June, an off-duty Metro police Constable Nkosinathi Hamilton Ndlovu (57) was shot and killed at Glebelands hostel at Umlazi in Durban. He was also robbed of his service pistol by two unknown males.

The case was opened at Umlazi police station and handed over to the Hawks from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further exploration.

“The Hawks started an intensive investigation that led to the arrest of Siphakamiso Jeffrey Sosibo (31) who was found in possession of the deceased’s firearm. He was placed under arrest and charged accordingly,” police reported.  “The matter was remanded several occasions before his ultimate sentencing on 12 April 2024 and the bail application was successfully opposed by the Investigating Officer.”

The accused was further declared unfit to possess firearm. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and extolled the Investigating Officer and his team for excellent work in ensuring that the perpetrator is behind the bars where he belongs. He further said that although the sentence could not bring back life but at least justice has been served to family that lost the loved one. “The sentence will serve as a deterrent to all those still think to commit the similar crime” said Major General.
