With eight housemates left and two weeks away from the grand prize of R2-million – the largest-ever payday in Big Brother Mzansi history – it is now definitely anyone’s game as this week saw no evictions.
Now on day 56 of 71, the housemates still in the running are Gash1, Libo, Mphowabadimo, Sis Tamara, Terry, Thato, Themba and Tulz.
Although housemates went into the eviction show aware that no one would be going home as there were no nominations, host Lawrence Maleka had fun as he led them to believe someone would indeed be going home after all.
“A non-nomination week doesn’t mean a non-eviction week,” he said to them during crossover, before later telling the audience: “I’m not sending anyone home but I do get to have a little fun making the housemates stress.”
And stress, they did. Aside from first-time Head of House Themba and his deputy Libo who automatically have immunity, the housemates spent the hour of the show visibly worried that their journey might be coming to an end tonight.
When asked by Lawrence how he would feel if he were to be evicted tonight, Tulz – who has never been put up for nomination – simply said: “Whatever comes, comes.”
Asked if she had thought she would make it to the top eight, Mphowabadimo said: “Not even. Coming here was just about being a part of this experience, and the game moving as it did has proved that nothing is impossible.”
Lawrence wasn’t the only performer on top of his game this evening – the show opened with a killer performance by yanos hitmakers Reece Madlisa and Zuma singing the smash ‘Iy’ntsimbi Zase Envy’, before Pabi Cooper later lit up the stage with the banger ‘Bambelela’.
One of the most topical highlights of the past week was the blossoming of Gash1 and Thato’s romance. The relationship has elicited judgement from some housemates, such as Terry, who said she didn’t think the couple’s dynamic was healthy as “they have a lot of co-dependency”.
When Tulz had asked Gash1 who he would choose to win Big Brother Mzansi between him and Thato, Gash1 didn’t hesitate to say he would choose himself. “That’s why I came here. I must not lose sight of my goals.” Yikes.
But during the eviction show, Tash1 (as Lawrence coined them) were blushing and in high spirits when asked what it felt like to live in the land of lovers.
Throughout the eviction show, Lawrence made the nervous housemates stand in pairs – only to tell them one by one that they were safe. Fun for us, not so fun for them. Next week will be an eviction week, before the finale takes place on Sunday 3 April.
